Second Gotthard Tunnel

The Gotthard road tunnel is getting on in years and needs comprehensive refurbishment. To ensure that this major road link can remain open during the renovation work, the Federal Roads Office FEDRO is building a second tunnel, which is expected to be in operation from 2030. The first tube will then be refurbished. Both tunnels will then be open from 2033. Only one lane per direction will be open at any one time, so traffic capacity through the Gotthard will not be increased. On the following pages you can read about the second Gotthard tube, about the region and activities at the construction site.
