We cordially invite you to the Construction Site Open House in Airolo. Here, you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience the construction work on the second tube of the Gotthard Road Tunnel up close and to tour parts of the construction site that are normally off-limits. Our experts will be on hand to provide background information and answer your questions.
The Open Construction Site Day will take place on:
SEPTEMBER 19, 2026, FROM 9:00 A.M. TO 3:30 P.M., IN AIROLO
Program:
- Guided tour of the construction site with explanations from experts
- Exhibition of construction and emergency vehicles
- Information about Swissgrid’s new underground cable project
- Visit to the information center at the train station
- Free lunch for all visitors in the festival tent on Piazza Motta
- Musical entertainment
- Play area for children
Opportunity to visit the fall market in Airolo on Via San Gottardo.
The construction site open house is suitable and accessible to anyone interested. People with limited mobility are asked to register in advance via email at bellinzona@astra.admin.ch or by phone at 058 469 68 11. Sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. The event will take place regardless of the weather.
How to Get There:
We recommend traveling by public transportation. Airolo is easily accessible by train, with service in both directions every hour on the hour.
- By train or bus: Get off at the Airolo SBB station and follow the signs in the station underpass. The construction site is just a few minutes’ walk away.
- By car: Exit the highway at Airolo (Exit 41) and drive toward Nante. The free parking lot for the event
