When the two tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the main tunnel start up at the beginning of 2025, the materials management will also go into full operation. In the video, civil engineer Tobias Griessmair explains the challenge of transporting 7.4 million tons of rock. |
Around 7.4 million tons of rock will be excavated to build the second Gotthard tunnel. A large proportion of this will be reused – among other things for tunnel construction and the renovation of the first tube.
The excavated material is categorized in the tunnel and then transported to the surface. Almost all of the material is then transported to the processing plant on the south side via conveyor belts and through the Gotthard rail tunnel.
Due to the limited space available in the Urner Reusstal, an additional cavern was excavated in Göschenen, where the underground concrete plant is currently being installed.
