Renaturation measures in Göschenen: projects for people and nature

15.06.2025

As part of the Göscheneralptal landscape development con-cept, two key infrastructure projects have been successfully implemented in Göschenen. The heavily frequented circular trail and the unstable dry stone walls in Wasenrein have under-gone extensive restoration – with the aim of sustainably im-proving safety, natural value and the visitor experience.

Upgrading of the circular trail in Göschenen

In late summer 2024, the 950-metre-long circular trail that runs from Gummeli through Wasenrain to Guntersmatt was upgraded in recognition of the fact it had seen better days. The work was carried out in two one-week phases, with this chiefly being made possible by the committed support provid-ed by the Civil Protection Or-ganisation. Materials were transported to the drop-off points by helicopter. A fact par-ticularly worthy of mention is that around 225 linear metres of round timber were used to replace edging and wooden steps. Other work included the restoration of a dry stone wall, the reworking of the trail edges, the refurbishment of three bridges and benches and the cleaning of the fountain and drainage channels.

The circular trail is now in excel-lent condition once more – well worth a visit!

Restoration of the dry stone walls in Göschenen

In October 2024, the severely damaged dry stone walls in the Wasenrain area on the edge of the village of Göschenen were restored. Over the course of around four weeks, a total of 33 walls were dismantled down to their damaged sections, care-fully repaired and subsequently rebuilt. Approximately 220 cubic metres of stone from the exist-ing walls were reused. The steep terrain posed a particular challenge, making the use of the 12-tonne walking excavator more difficult. During the work, this repeatedly had to be se-cured to trees so as to prevent it from slipping. To protect the road and canteen facilities be-low, additional formwork panels and steel palisades were in-stalled in order to stop falling rocks from causing damage.

The dry stone walls are now stable and secure once more.
