A2 Second Gotthard tube

The most important structure is the new tunnel, which runs parallel to the existing tunnel and is being built simultaneously from the north and south. Other work includes:

  • the access tunnels
  • the underground ventilation centres
  • The re-routing of the service and infrastructure tunnel.
  • The Galleria di Airolo (GdA) motorway tunnel

Why is the building work taking place?

The Gotthard road tunnel has been in operation since 1980 and is in need of extensive renovation. The Federal Roads Office FEDRO is building a second tube so that the important connection between the north and south can remain open while the work is performed.

Who is performing the building work?

The Federal Roads Office FEDRO is responsible for the construction work. The work is divided into various lots, with FEDRO awarding contracts to construction firms, planning offices, engineers and other companies.

Where is the building work taking place?

The second tube runs from Göschenen to Airolo and is situated parallel to the first tunnel at a distance of 70 metres. The entrance to the new tunnel is located in the existing portal structures, where the entrance to the service and infrastructure tunnel is currently found. The installation sites are spread across the two villages.
