A2 Second Gotthard tube

The new tunnel runs parallel to the first tunnel at a distance of 70 metres and will also be 16.9 kilometres in length. It has a circular profile and a diameter of 12.26 metres. This is in contrast to the first tunnel, which has a horseshoe-shaped profile. The carriageway in the tunnel, including the hard shoulder, is approximately eight metres wide. Verges run alongside the carriageway, while a wastewater channel is located on the right-hand side in the direction of travel. The space above the carriageway is utilised for the ventilation systems and the area beneath the carriageway houses two service ducts in which the lines for electricity, communication and extinguishing water are installed.
