Currently the commune of Airolo to the south of the Gotthard suffers from huge amounts of traffic. The road layout dates back to the 1970s and is no longer suitable to cope with the situation today. Minor rerouting and repairs over the last 50 years have done little to change this. The construction of the second tube offers a unique opportunity to adapt the road system to the latest state of the art. FEDRO is using 1.9 million tonnes of the excavated material to create a new gallery for the motorway in Airolo, giving the area a new look and a fresh lease of life.
The commune of Airolo lies directly at the southern foot of the Gotthard Massif. It is a popular destination for travellers passing through who want to relax in an attractive valley in this northernmost part of the canton of Ticino. Both in summer and winter, Airolo offers a wide range of tourist attractions, including pleasant hiking trails, interesting architecture and a skiing area with modern facilities.
