A2 Second Gotthard tube

A new junction at Airolo

Currently the commune of Airolo to the south of the Gotthard suffers from huge amounts of traffic. The road layout dates back to the 1970s and is no longer suitable to cope with the situation today. Minor rerouting and repairs over the last 50 years have done little to change this. The construction of the second tube offers a unique opportunity to adapt the road system to the latest state of the art. FEDRO is using 1.9 million tonnes of the excavated material to create a new gallery for the motorway in Airolo, giving the area a new look and a fresh lease of life.

Road gallery at Airolo

New green spaces and a new link between the village of Airolo and the right flank of the valley will improve the quality of life for local residents. The Albinengo viaduct will be dismantled. The road gallery will create a total of around 160,000 square me-tres of green space above, including new low-nutrient, biodiverse pastues and a wetland biotope of around 3,500 square metres.
In addition to these ecologi-cal measures, the commune of Airolo will receive an area of around 27,000 square metres of land for sports and leisure use to compensate for the loss of the sports field in Madrano. The cost of these various measures are borne fifty-fifty by FEDRO and the Canton of Ticino.
