The Gotthard Road Tunnel between Göschenen and Airolo has been in operation since 1980. After nearly 50 years of use, comprehensive refurbishment is required. Many structural components are reaching the end of their service life and need to be replaced.
The refurbishment ensures that the tunnel can continue to be operated safely and reliably in the future. At the same time, systems and installations will be upgraded to the latest standards. Refurbishment works will begin in 2030.
The aim of the refurbishment is to renew the structures of the existing tunnel and make it fit for a further service life of around 30 years.
The main measures include:
Refurbishment works will be carried out after the opening of the second tube in 2030. This ensures that the north–south connection remains open throughout the construction period.
The refurbishment of the first tube is expected to begin in 2030.
The works will take place along the entire length of the tunnel and are therefore particularly demanding. At the same time, the second tube will remain in operation. This places high demands on construction logistics, safety and coordination.
Initial preparatory works will already start in 2026, including asbestos removal in the service and infrastructure gallery.
